The DEEP BLACK novels

By Stephen Coonts and Jim DeFelice

This series of original paperback thrillers was created by Steve and Martin H. Greenberg of TeknoBooks.  A total of six Deep Black books have been published, and there will be at least two more.  The seventh, Deep Black: Arctic Gold, is scheduled for publication in early 2009

These novels have a slightly different feel than the tales Steve writes by himself.  They are intended to be fast reads about the fears of the day, the good guys (and gals) versus the bad guys, full of action and suspense, with more twists and turns than a Rubik’s cube.  It’s an old formula and it still works.  These books are for sale wherever good books are sold, and, of course, on-line.

A spy plane gathering data on a new Russian weapon is blown out of the sky by a mysterious MiG.  Is it an accident or the start of the next world war?  One U.S. agency has what it takes to find out—the National Security agency and its covert operations team: Deep Black.

Working for the NSA, ex-Marine sniper Charlie Dean is dispatched to Russia, hooking up with former Delta Force trooper Lia DeFrancesca to find out what happened to the plane.  A Deep Black team stumbles across an even more alarming secret—a plot to assassinate the Russian president and overthrow democratic government by force.  The coup could have dire consequences for Russia and the world.  With no clearance from the government it’s called on to protect, the National Security Agency goes to war.  But before Lia and Dean can unravel the conspiracy, they learn that one of the spy plane’s passengers—an NSA techie—survived the crash.  Critical information could fall into enemy hands.  And that enemy is playing the game to the death.

Unraveling the mystery is a job for Kegan’s best friend, NSA operative Charlie Dean.  His mission is to infiltrate the scientist’s circle of associates and decipher Kegan’s confidential research.  Dispatched to cover Charlie is Delta Force trooper Lia DeFrancesca.  The trail leads them to the core of a wide-spread killer fever that’s been dormant for centuries—and its link to a virus that’s quickly spreading victim by victim.  With time running out Charlie and Lia must find Keegan, uncover his secrets, cut a terrorist threat to the quick, and stop the unimaginable outbreak of a new biological nightmare.

Dear Stephen Coonts and Jim DeFelice,
I never congratulate a writer on his work (even James Patterson), but your recent novel, DEEP BLACK: CONSPIRACY, is a unique exception. I so much enjoyed this book. I found your writing style, story line, character representation, and content cohesion -- the whole nine yards -- to be exceptional. You guys are Good!
I read piles of books by current authors; some very good, some make me sorry I bought the book. But your stuff is superior. Keep it going.
Best Regards,
JOHN W. MITCHELL August 6, 2008

Mr. Coonts,
I just finished Deep Black, and I must tell you I found it very entertaining. I have read many books you have authored and find your writing style enjoyable. I am also a navy man. I spend 10 years as a Navy Corpsman, the first 7 being with the Marines. I am now an accountant in Bend, Oregon. Keep up the great writing, I look forward to reading your newest one, The Asassin.

Hi Steve,

We just finished Deep Black:Payback. These books coauthored with Jim DeFelice are weird, incoherent and a waste of time. I noted this with his Tom Clancy's books and it carries thru with your books. Please do your own books and forget coauthoring. You are my favorite author...

Very sincerely,
J.R. Nevill, Cornelius, N.C. June 30, 2008

Just finished reading Deep Black, the 2nd. novel by you that I've read.  Crickey,! there was a lot of techno. stuff that went right over my head but it sure gave the book some meat. Despite my ignorance of such things I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, as usual. Keep up the good work.

Regards.

Hello Mr. Coonts,
Thanks for the stories. My father found a copy of Deep Black: Payback a couple years ago while he was traveling and gave it to me. At the time I had not heard of your writing. I read it and enjoyed it greatly and have now read all the books in the Deep Black series (I just finished Jihad today!). You and Jim DeFelice do a great job. I'm looking forward to the new one.

Anyway, nice web site as well. Enjoy the day!

Mr. Coonts,
Several years ago, I saw the movie "Flight of the Intruder". It was the first time I stood up and cheered in a long while. I purchased my own copy and have enjoyed it several more times. Finding out that you had written the novel that the movie (I was glad you didn’t kill off Cole in your book) was made from; I have bought and read and reread 9 of your books including one that you and Jim DeFelice wrote, Deep Black Jihad. I was rereading it this evening when I finally got around to visiting your web site and found that there was more Jake Grafton to read. I was delighted for I knew that even though I would be reading out of sequence that I would still be enjoying your writing.  Thank you for such great books. And thank you for your tips to want to be writers.
I have studied writing on and off for a couple of years and find all your advice to be right on the money. When the same things are “said” by successful authors, I put those down as truths and disregard the rest.  If I have enough time on this earth, I will write at least one novel and when it is published I will send you a copy as a gift for all the enjoyment of reading you gave me.

Thank you for making my mind think about the actions and attitudes of your characters and for their beliefs that they fought and died for, for such is a part of life of us humans no matter where we are born or what ideology we have accepted. I am thankful that I have been allowed to be born in and live in the USA.
Ted W. Patton February 17, 2008
P.S. Please give my thanks to Mrs. Coonts for helping you.

Dear Steve,
Your book Deep Black was an extremely awesome book. It was impossible to put down and your characters were new and amusing. I hope the rest of your deep black books will be just as good as the first one.

I am probably your newest and biggest fan! I have never gone to an author's website or been so excited about reading since I was a kid! I started the Deep Black series a few months ago and have not put them down since. I am nearing the end of Deep Black: Payback and looking forward to Deep Black: Jihad, however, I'm a bit concerned that there aren't more Deep Black in the works.  I'm certainly willing to move into your other works, but hope to read more on the lives of the Art Room crew. Anything coming soon?? Thanks for keeping my mind active and imaginative!

We love your books! We are eagerly awaiting the latest Tommy Carmellini publication.  And we are just finishing listening to Deep Black: Jihad. The Deep Black series is such fun and the reader, J. Charles is the best we've ever heard.

I love the Deep Black series. When a new one comes out, I don't read it immediately - I start again with "Deep Black" and re-read the entire series in order ending with the new book. I hope the series will go beyond six books.  Also just discovered the "Jake Grafton" books and are working on them in order as I locate them.

Just finished Deep Black- Jihad, always bring one of your books when traveling, but this one was totally engrossing- I almost resented the meal break interruption! Thanks

Mr. Coonts,
I have just finished my third book in your Deep Black series. There are not many writers who catch my interest as much as you do.
Currently I have 24 of your books in my home and I am looking forward to completing my collection of your books. Semper Fi,
Don Sanders February 25, 2007

Steve, I just finished my 2nd book of yours, Deep Black: Dark Zone. The first I read was Deep Black. Both have been outstanding. I read a lot of action books and yours are some of, if not the best. I look forward to finishing the series soon, and reading many more of your novels.
Keep Lia, Charlie, and Karr going. This is one of the best series I have read so far.
Doug Burns February 6, 2007

Mr. Coonts. Just finished another of your books, Deep Black Jihad. Over the last fifteen years or so, I've read a good many of your books, probably not all. You are, after all, very prolific.
Just wanted to say that you've never let me down. For every dime I've spent toward one of your stories, I've gotten at least a dollars worth of entertainment and relaxation. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for all the writers in this genre. Before I retired I was a cop in a large middle american city. Have to tell you I have worked with some of the characters in your stories. They actually are alive out there and some of them gave me fits! On the whole, decent guys though. Did their job and didn't act like celluloid imitations of somebody's politically correct ideal. All I've ever had to do to identify with your characters and get in their heads was to just slightly suspend my disbelief. I never had to lose my mind totally to enjoy one of your books.
Said all this just to say thanks, your efforts have been greatly appreciated.
Lloyd Davidson January 25, 2007

Steve, I love the Jake Grafton novel adventures. Your website has answered my question about your newest book with the Jake Grafton character. I have just finished reading Deep black, Biowar, and the Dark Zone. Now I am hooked on the Rubens Art Room crew of Tommy Karr, Charlie Dean and Lia. What is their next assignment????
